Historical Links India And Vatican

India established diplomatic relations with the Holy See in June 1948, soon after independence. Since then, India has received three Papal visits:

Pope Paul VI (1964): Participated at the International Eucharistic Congress in Mumbai.

Pope John Paul II (1986): Travelled to multiple cities in India and met with various religious and political figures.

Pope John Paul II (1999): Came back for a state visit where he met the then President K R Narayanan and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In Pope Francis, the world has lost an advocate for climate change, social inequality, migration, and interfaith relations in conjunction with their spiritual leader. This was a pivotal moment in modern history for the Catholic Church, as they experienced an era of humility, reform and compassion.
