Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Secretary of State, Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski, has credited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for persuading Russian President Vladimir Putin to refrain from using tactical nuclear weapons during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18 on March 17, Bartoszewski remarked on PM Modi’s diplomatic efforts, stating,

“We had a great visit of PM Modi to Warsaw. PM Modi did persuade Putin not to use nuclear tactical weapons. We want permanent peace. We want stable and sustainable peace in Ukraine.”

PM Modi’s Stance on the Ukraine War

The Polish minister’s comments align with PM Modi’s recent statements on a podcast with Lex Fridman, where he reaffirmed his belief that the solution to the Ukraine conflict lies in diplomacy rather than warfare.

PM Modi emphasized his balanced relationship with both Russia and Ukraine, allowing him to engage in direct discussions with their leaders.

“I have a close relationship with Russia and Ukraine alike. I can sit with President Putin and say that this is not the time for war, and I can also tell President Zelenskyy in a friendly way that regardless of how many people stand with you, there will never be a resolution on the battlefield,” Modi said.

He further stressed that peace could only be achieved through direct negotiations between the two warring nations, rather than discussions among Ukraine’s allies alone.

“Ukraine may hold countless discussions with their allies, but it will bear no fruit. Discussions must include both parties instead. Initially, it was challenging to find peace, but now the current situation presents an opportunity for meaningful and productive talks between Ukraine and Russia.”

Modi’s Call for Peace and Poland’s Support for Ukraine

Clarifying his stance, PM Modi declared,

“I have always maintained that I stand with peace. I am not neutral. I have a stance, and that is peace.”

Meanwhile, Poland remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its war efforts. Bartoszewski reiterated that Poland has been assisting Ukraine since the start of the war, providing humanitarian aid, accepting thousands of Ukrainian refugees, and offering military support.

“We have helped Ukraine since the very beginning of the war. We have thousands of migrants coming from Ukraine into Poland. We are ready to provide a peacekeeping force and military support,” he said.
