On his Tuesday visit, Prime Minister Modi met with the Indian diaspora and spontaneous Geet Gawai performances were rendered in his honor alongside a warm welcome from the Indian women community of the diaspora.

Geet Gawai is one of the traditional folk songs sung in Bhojpuri, which came along with women from the Bhojpuri region in India when they migrated to Mauritius.

In his own words, “Deeply touched by the warm welcome by the Indian community in Mauritius. Their connection with Indian heritage, culture and values is truly inspiring. And this bond of history and heart continues to thrive across generations,” He shared this on his X account.

As Modiji was being given a warm welcome by the Indian community residing at the hotel he was staying at, they greeted him with slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ while celebrating him with the indian tri color flag.

In December 2016, Geet Gawai was officially listed with UNESCO as significant for the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as recognition of its cultural importance.

“Gwati gawai” is sung primarily in a wedding context, along with other events in life with calls to the deities.

He arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday where his Mauritius counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam personally received him with a garland at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.

“Landed in Mauritius. Grateful to my friend, PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for welcoming me at the airport, this visit is a great opportunity to meet a dear friend and look forward to work together in different areas,” Modi posted on X.

“The post further read, 'I will today meet President Dharam Gokhool and PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and later in the day I will address a community program.'”

Ramgoolam together with the Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice of Mauritius, Speaker of the National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition, Foreign Minister, Cabinet Secretary, Chairperson of Grand Port District Council and others attended to greet Modi.

A total of 200 dignitaries were present to greet Modi.

Modi will meet the president of Mauritius, the prime minister, and several senior dignitaries and leaders of political parties on the island.
