Mauritius News :  Just imagine how delighted and proud you would feel hearing ‘Jai Bharat’ in a foreign nation. The same was experienced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A few hours ago, he reached the island country and was welcomed with traditional Bihari folk songs when he arrived for his 2-day visit. Modi was ecstatic as he raised and clapped his hands to the folk melody, accompanied by dholak and manjira.

All hail the motherland…

The women jubilantly sang, ‘Jai Mauritius, say Jai Bharat, blessed is our country, Modiji has arrived.' The song captures the cultural richness of Bhojpuri people of India which was transported here by the Indian diaspora settled in Mauritius.

The song style 'Geet Gawai', Bhojpuri folk music, is quite popular in Mauritius. It was awarded special recognition by being inscribed in The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in December, 2016. 'Geet Gawai' is now considered a significant aspect of cultural identity for the Indian diaspora in Mauritius.

PM Modi wrote on social media saying, "I have received a wonderful greeting from the Indian community living in Mauritius. How deeply connected they are to Indian heritage, culture, and values is astounding. The bond of history and heart is nurtured over generations."

Mauriitus PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam invited Prime Minister Modi to act as the chief guest during the National Day celebrations taking place on March 12. This is a crucial development for India Mauritius relations as it marks PM Modi's visit to Mauritius after 2015.
