Continued Escalation Of India-Pakistan Tension
This was preceded by the brutal April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the death of 26 individuals. This act of terror lead to the Indian government commencing Operation Sindoor which is targeted towards 9 terror hubs located in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir. These included the Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba facilities.
India claimed to have taken down over 50 Pakistani drones as part of a notable counter-drone operation. Furthermore, on May 7 – 8, they foiled a missile and drone attack by Pakistan on Indian military installations and claim to have destroyed a Pakistani air defence system in Lahore.
India’s Response: ‘Calibrated and Precise’
Vikram Misri, India’s Foreign Secretary stated that Islamabad was targeted with calibrated strikes which, in his words, “were precise and non-escalatory.” However, these explanations do not absolve the civilian deaths inflicted by Pakistan’s retaliatory action on regions such as Poonch.
It was subsequently ascertained that air defence suppression, to the stated degree of aggression, was implemented after evaluating the air defence perimeter of Lahore.
