A group of militants attacked the tourists at Baisaran a meadow near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 2025. They fired indiscriminately at a group of about 40 tourists killing 28 people and injuring over 20.

Shubham Dwivedi, Age 31, a businessman hailing from Kanpur was also a part of the attack. He went on a holiday to the region with his family and his newlywed wife whom he married just 2 months before this incident. As told by one of the relatives, the gunman sought Shubham’s identification and solicited him to say a specific religious line. To their astonishment, for not being able to accomplish this ‘request’ he was shot at a seeable distance.

Account of Incident:

The Baisaran region as the tourists could foresee is quite famous for being a sight to behold and a hot spot for being a starting place for treks. It can be succinctly put as a tourist destination. Most locals working nearby fled the moment the shooting began. Survivors describe a rather doubtful narrative as people trying to save their lives with gun deposit still rolling.

Responses from Government and Society:

The incident provoked harsh criticism from government representatives who promised quick action against the perpetrators. There have been demands for increased security in the area, particularly in anticipation of the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage, which draws countless tourists. So much so, there is a growing focus regarding the need to protect the tourists coming to Kashmir.

Effects on the Area:

The attack has darkened the Valley's soaring tourism prospects. Local contractors and service providers who rely on tourism are now anxious about financial losses. As a consequence, there are worrying issues regarding peace and order, social cohesion, and the delicate calm in the region.
