By confronting Tahawwur Rana with a protected witness, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has advanced the probe of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. This development occurred shortly after Rana’s extradition to India and his 18-day custody for questioning.
Background on Rana’s Extradition
Tahawwur Rana was extradited from the US to India in lieu of charges related to the 2008 attacks. It is widely believed that he aided David Headley, the man who surveilled Mumbai prior to the attack, during its execution logistically.
The Role of the Protected Witness
The protected witness, formerly referred to as ‘employee B’, was an operations officer of Rana’s and assisted Headley with travels and accommodations for Mumbai. The witness, although oblivious to the executed plot, did follow Rana’s instructions to assist Headley’s setup in Mumbai.
How Rana Allegedly Helped Headley
Investigators assert that through his immigration services business, Rana helped Headley secure visas and facilitated him assimilating into Indian society. Additionally, he was responsible for arranging Headley’s travel and the procurement of supporting documents for his alleged conspiracy associates.
Interrogation Techniques
The attack will attempt to verify whether Rana was indeed involved in the planning stages of the attacks. It is thought that this could further corroborate claims of Rana’s linkages with Lashkar-e-Taiba’s activities within India.
Lack of New Evidence- Importance of The Interrogation
This is the very first occasion that Indian investigators have had the chance to interrogate Rana face to face. The exchange with the protected witness is considered a pivotal part of the puzzle for understanding the extent to which Rana’s facilitation of Headley’s actions was prior to the multi-targeted assaults.
Unfounded Accusations Concerning Assam’s Terror Act
Rana is also believed to have been in contact with other co-conspirators who may have ties with Pakistani intelligence agencies. The accusations that he has placed in his inn will be conspiracy, terrorism, forgery, and aiding and abetting murder.
