The remark has been widely condemned as tone-deaf and insensitive, especially when compared to the profound losses suffered by countless families in both Israel and Gaza.
The comment was allegedly made during a recent cabinet meeting. Netanyahu mentioned that his youngest son, Avner Netanyahu, has had to postpone his wedding twice since the conflict began following the Hamas-led attacks on October 7. He framed this inconvenience as a personal sacrifice connected to the war effort.
The backlash was swift and severe across social media and among the Israeli public. Critics pointed out the stark contrast between a delayed celebration and the true costs of war: families mourning the loss of loved ones, the agonizing wait for the return of hostages still held captive in Gaza, and citizens displaced from their homes in both northern and southern Israel. Many felt the Prime Minister's comment showed a profound lack of empathy and a disconnect from the reality of their suffering.
The controversy comes amid a conflict that has exacted a devastating toll. The October 7 attacks resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people in Israel, with around 250 taken hostage. In response, Israel's military offensive in Gaza has led to the deaths of over 37,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, and has created a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
For many, Netanyahu's statement trivialized the immense grief and trauma gripping the region, highlighting a perceived gap between the leadership's perspective and the lived experiences of those most impacted by the war.
