Suspense crime, Digital Desk : NCRTC has suggested the establishment of four semi-high-speed Namo Bharat corridors with the starting point in Bengaluru. Bangalore's congested highways would greatly benefit from improved connections to its satellite cities.
List of Proposed Corridors:
Bangalore to Hubli and Kolar (65 km)
Bangalore to Mysore (145 km)
Bangalore to Tumkur (60 km)
Bangalore to Hosur, Krishnagiri, and Dharmapuri (138 km)
These corridors will stretch into Tamilnadu and facilitate inter-state regional development.
Use of Delhi-Meerut RRTS Model as an Example
The partially operational Delhi-Meerut corridor from October 2023 serves as an example. NCRTC is planning to implement the same equity sharing model: 60% of funding provided by multilateral lenders, 20% from Central Government, and 20% from state.
NCRTC has offered to help some Karnataka officials with the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and showed them operational sections of the Delhi-NCR line.
Emphasis on lowest TOD: Transit Oriented Development
With regards to land use, NCRTC promotes a policy of TOD aimed at maximum spatial development for their corridors. For the case of Bangalore, it seeks to alleviate congestion by promoting polycentric development through station area denser centralization around stations.Enhancing The Economic Potential of Satellite Cities
The examined corridors demonstrate these towns' growth potential:
Kolar, transforming into a logistics and manufacturing hub
Mysuru, possessing a tourism and industrial base
Krishnagiri and Hosur, marked by their economic importance
Tumakura, an emerging industrial region
These areas remain poorly integrated which stifles economic synergies.
Spatial Analysis of Other Transit Projects Within Karnataka
The state is also considering the extension of Bengaluru Metro to include:
Challaghatta–Bidadi
Silk Institute–Harohlli
Maddawara-Tumkur
Bommasandra–Attibele
Kalena Agrahara to Sarjapur through Anekal
Devanahalli Airport line
Even with push from Tamil Nadu for the Bommasandra–Hosur cross-border metro, the Karnataka side is hesitant over expenses and cost sharing.
Why RRTS Is More Practical To Consider Than The Metro
Transport experts advocate the RRTS systems over metro lines for greater distances on the grounds of higher speed, wider capacity, and fewer stops. Metro services are more appropriate when moving between different points within the city since they are more frequent and have lower seating availability.
Plans by K-RIDE to develop a 452-km suburban rail were curtailed to 148 km due to opposition from Indian Railways.
The Vision for High-Speed Rail in India
In another development, NHSRCL proposes a 435 km Chennai Mysuru High Speed Rail with 9 planned stations. Expected to be completed by 2051.
Economic and Commuter Benefits
NCRTC holds the belief that Namo Bharat corridors can:
Decrease travel time
Boost the value of land
Enhance market reach
Reduce congestion in Bengaluru
Accelerate the process of industrial decentralization
Assist in the development of housing in the suburban areas
For example, the Delhi-Meerut corridor is anticipated to raise the share of public transport use from 37% to 63% while also decreasing road traffic by more than 100,000 private vehicles.
