Legal scrutiny surrounding the high-profile Salboni land grabbing case intensified on Wednesday as the West Bengal government strongly advocated before the Supreme Court for the custodial interrogation of Sumit Roy, the personal secretary of prominent Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee. Appearing before a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant alongside Justices Jaymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta maintained that custodial questioning is indispensable due to substantial evidence indicating that Roy deposited massive amounts of unaccounted cash into bank accounts. The state administration argued that the accused has consistently maintained an evasive stance throughout the preliminary phases of the investigation, asserting that comprehensive transcripts and financial audit trails have been formally submitted to substantiate these claims before the judicial panel.
Legal Challenges and Ongoing Investigation Status
The Supreme Court proceedings stem from a special leave petition filed by Sumit Roy, who is actively challenging the Calcutta High Court's August 3 ruling that denied him pre-arrest anticipatory bail in connection with the Salboni land scam. During earlier hearings on August 31, the apex court directed the prosecuting agency to produce comprehensive documentation concerning disputed bank transactions for the petitioner's perusal while extending interim protection from arrest. Representing the petitioner, Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan contended that recent public reports indicate a chargesheet has already been filed in the matter. However, Solicitor General Mehta clarified to the bench that while a chargesheet was filed against a co-accused, the formal investigation specifically targeting Roy remains actively ongoing, prompting the Supreme Court to schedule the next detailed hearing for Thursday.
