PM Modi Inaugurates Bhogapuram International Airport: A Massive Rs 5,600 Crore Boost for Andhra Pradesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday officially inaugurated the state-of-the-art Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. Built with an estimated investment of Rs 5,600 crore under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, this ambitious aviation project spans across 2,700 acres of land. Ahead of the grand inauguration, Prime Minister Modi toured the expansive passenger terminal building, inspecting the world-class amenities and advanced infrastructure designed to cater to domestic and international travelers alike.

Architectural Marvel and Advanced Capacity

Constructed remarkably ahead of schedule by nearly five months, this greenfield aviation hub stands as one of the fastest-built airport projects in India. It has already secured its full operational license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). In its initial phase, the airport is fully equipped to handle up to 6 million passengers every year, with future expansion blueprints designed to scale capacity to an impressive 40 million passengers annually. The architectural brilliance of the passenger terminal draws deep inspiration from the traditional Chuttilu huts of Andhra Pradesh, the scenic landscapes of the Araku Valley, and the dynamic movement of flying fish.

World-Class Runway and Cutting-Edge Tech Features

The newly launched airport features a massive 3,800-meter-long Code-E runway capable of safely accommodating the world's largest commercial passenger and cargo aircraft, including the Boeing 777, 787 Dreamliner, and Airbus A330/A340 models. To ensure a seamless passenger experience, operations integrate next-generation technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), biometric boarding systems, automated baggage handling, and predictive operational frameworks. Furthermore, the facility heavily emphasizes environmental sustainability by incorporating green infrastructure elements like a 5-megawatt solar power plant, advanced rainwater harvesting systems, and dedicated electric vehicle charging stations.
