Karnataka Minister's 'Tip Government Officials' Remark Sparks Row: BJP Demands Immediate Apology

A major political storm has erupted across Karnataka after the Hassan district in-charge minister, K.M. Shivalingegowda, publicly defended the practice of citizens offering monetary tips or honorariums to government officials for the timely processing of public files. The remarks, delivered during an administrative grievance redressal forum, triggered immediate outrage among attending citizens and ignited a fierce political confrontation between the ruling administration and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Critics and civic bodies have slammed the minister's statement as an overt rationalization of bureaucratic graft, demanding absolute accountability and a zero-tolerance policy toward corrupt administrative cultures.

Fierce Public Backlash at Grievance Meet and Administrative Intervention

The incident took place during the "Prajaseva Andolan" public grievance redressal meeting held on Saturday in Hassan district. The gathering descended into chaos when a local farmer named Puneet from Alur taluk, accompanied by several local youths dealing with unresolved land disputes, openly confronted the minister over his remarks. Challenging Shivalingegowda directly, the delegation questioned why taxpayers should provide tips to officials who are already drawn full state salaries, pointing out that such allowances legitimize routine bribery. As attending villagers joined the protest, Hassan Deputy Commissioner K.S. Latha Kumari was forced to intervene, calming the agitated crowd by issuing a stern assurance that stringent legal action would be initiated against any government official demanding or accepting illicit payments.

Damage Control Followed by Fierce Opposition Attack and Apology Demands

Attempting damage control as public anger mounted, Minister Shivalingegowda offered a clarification, claiming his remarks were taken out of context and asserting that he merely spoke about respecting honest officials rather than advocating extortion or bribery. However, the opposition BJP seized on the issue to launch a scathing offensive against the government. Senior BJP MLC C.T. Ravi took to social media platform X to attack the administration, highlighting the irony between official rhetoric urging citizens to report even ten-rupee bribes and a cabinet minister normalizing honorariums under the guise of dignity. Labeling the minister's defense unacceptable to the self-respecting citizens of Karnataka, the BJP demanded that Shivalingegowda unconditionally retract his statement and tender an unreserved public apology.
