In a noticeable shift across the country's aviation landscape, domestic air passenger traffic in India recorded a year-on-year contraction of 6.34 percent in August 2026, carrying a total of 121.26 lakh passengers compared to 129.47 lakh flown by scheduled domestic carriers during the corresponding month in 2025. Official monthly traffic performance indicators published by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reveal that cumulative air traffic for the January-August 2026 period reached 1,105.30 lakh fliers, reflecting a slight moderation against the 1,107.26 lakh passengers handled during the same eight-month stretch last year, driven by seasonal monsoon lulls, network consolidations, and dynamic fare calibrations.
Air India Climbs to 26.7% Market Share: IndiGo Contracts as SpiceJet Hits Lows
Despite the overarching seasonal dip in passenger volumes, the monthly metrics marked notable realignments among India’s major airline groups. Market leader IndiGo observed its domestic market share contract to 65 percent in August, slipping from the 67.4 percent it controlled in July. Simultaneously, cash-strapped carrier SpiceJet saw its pie shrink further to 1.2 percent from 1.6 percent a month earlier. In sharp contrast, the Tata Group-backed Air India Group staged an aggressive surge, capturing a 26.7 percent domestic market share in August—a solid 2.7 percentage point increase over its July standing—underpinned by streamlined fleet integration and capacity expansions across primary trunk routes. Meanwhile, young carrier Akasa Air maintained steady operational footing, holding flat at a 5.5 percent market share across both consecutive months.
Punctuality Metrics at Top 10 Airports: IndiGo Tops On-Time Performance at 91.5%
On operational reliability, the DGCA reported strong on-time performance (OTP) across the nation's 10 major metropolitan airports, highlighting rigorous ground turnaround procedures despite heavy monsoon weather disruptions. IndiGo led the punctuality rankings in August with an impressive 91.5 percent on-time departure and arrival score. Akasa Air followed closely in the second position with an OTP rating of 90.5 percent, while the expanding Air India Group rounded out the top tier, logging an 83.9 percent on-time operational mark.
