With an increasing number of bureaucrats filming reels, uploading personal stories, and sharing unauthorized opinions while on duty, administrative authorities are stepping in to restore professional decorum. Alongside this workplace discipline, the administration is also rolling out citizen-centric digital reforms to streamline public access to state services.
Curbing Workplace Distractions and Self-Promotion
The rising craze for social media has led many officers to spend valuable official hours scrolling through feeds, filming content, and creating online spectacles. Furthermore, officials have frequently utilized personal social media handles to glorify their positions and routine work—a practice that goes against established administrative ethics. Senior serving and retired bureaucrats have widely welcomed the upcoming code, noting that existing conduct rules were drafted decades ago before the digital age, leaving a glaring regulatory gap regarding workplace internet and social media usage.
Prime Minister Modi Directs Bureaucracy and Digital Unification
The initiative to draft the social media guidelines was directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during high-level interactions with senior bureaucrats. Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan formally outlined the key directives to officials, emphasizing the need for disciplined conduct across all government departments. During the same briefing, the Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to fast-track the launch of the 'Ek Bharat' (One India) portal. This unified platform aims to eliminate citizen frustration by replacing multiple website logins with a single username and password for all government services.
