Finance Ministry Steps In as 5-Day Bank Strike Looms: Emergency Meeting Called to Keep Services Running
Taking a firm stance against potential financial disruption across the country, the Union Finance Ministry has convened a high-level emergency review meeting with top executives of public sector banks (PSBs), regional rural banks (RRBs), and representatives from the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) in New Delhi. The urgent intervention comes in direct response to the proposed three-day nationwide bank strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) from September 28 to September 30, 2026. Chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Financial Services (DFS), the meeting focuses on formulating contingency protocols, strengthening digital clearance pipelines, and ensuring uninterrupted branch operations so that retail consumers and commercial businesses face minimal distress during the proposed agitation.
The 5-Day Threat: Weekend Closures Amplify Strike Impact Nationwide
The impending disruption is compounded by the calendar, as the three-day strike immediately succeeds regular weekend closures on September 26 and September 27, threatening an unprecedented five consecutive days of frozen branch operations. The UFBU, which serves as the apex umbrella platform representing prominent bank officer and employee unions, previously observed a one-day nationwide strike on September 11 that severely disrupted counter services, clearing houses, and physical branch operations across multiple states. With the unions steadfast in demanding key institutional reforms—most notably the formal notification of a five-day banking workweek—the central government is accelerating administrative measures to keep essential cash flows, ATM networks, and core payment systems fully operational throughout the five-day window.
