In a profound display of empathy and leadership, Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari has stepped forward to support families impacted by the devastating natural disaster in Nepal, which left 37 residents from West Bengal missing. During a high-level meeting held on Wednesday at the State Secretariat's Nabanna auditorium, the Chief Minister personally met with the relatives of the missing tourists, listened patiently to their distressing accounts, and assured them of comprehensive state backing. Addressing the immediate financial vulnerability of the victims' families, he announced the donation of his entire monthly salary to support those affected.
Administrative Relief and Employment Support for Affected Families
Many of the individuals missing in the catastrophe were the sole breadwinners of their households, plunging their dependents into severe financial distress and procedural hurdles regarding daily administrative tasks such as managing bank accounts, accessing pensions, and booking domestic cooking gas. Recognizing these challenges, the Chief Minister directed officials to cut through bureaucratic red tape and immediately resolve these issues while factoring in the gravity of the humanitarian situation. Furthermore, the government is actively considering providing alternative employment or government jobs to at least one member in families where the primary earning individual remains untraceable.
Coordination with Central Authorities and International Channels
During the interaction, former MLA Subhrangshu Roy—whose wife, Sharmistha Bhowmick Roy, is among the missing—raised crucial questions regarding the active role of the Central Government and the Ministry of External Affairs in ongoing search and rescue operations. Chief Minister Shubhendu assured attendees that central authorities are maintaining constant diplomatic contact with the Nepal administration. While state officials noted that local jurisdiction cannot unilaterally declare missing persons dead across international borders without central coordination, the administration remains committed to exploring every diplomatic avenue, including reaching out through the Indian government to Chinese foreign ministries if reliable leads regarding safe camps emerge.
