Asian Games 2026: Indian Athletes Stranded in Japan Without Rooms and Proper Food

Post

Indian athletes arriving in Japan for the upcoming Asian Games 2026 encountered severe logistical hurdles and accommodation chaos. Traveling in two separate batches on Tuesday, the contingent experienced a grueling journey involving a stopover in Bangkok before reaching Nagoya at around 8:00 AM local time on Wednesday. Expecting a smooth transition to their quarters after a 12-hour transit, the athletes instead found themselves stranded for hours without rooms or proper meals, casting a shadow over their final preparations for the international sporting event.

Stranded Rowers and Inadequate Organizing Arrangements

The 30-member Indian rowing team—comprising 17 men and 5 women—faced immediate distress upon reaching their designated facility docked in Nagoya. Team members reported waiting from early morning until late evening without receiving their promised rooms. To cut costs, the organizing committee opted to house approximately 4,000 athletes and officials across unconventional venues, including the Costa Serena cruise ship featuring 1,500 cabins, alongside standard hotel rooms and wooden container-like huts. With competitions slated to begin imminently on September 19, the lack of basic resting facilities raised serious concerns among coaches and players alike.

Food Shortages and Scattering Across Alternative Hotels

Beyond the severe delay in securing shelter, athletes revealed that they were left without proper sustenance following their departure from Pune and Delhi. Organizers provided only drinking water, forcing competitors to survive on snacks brought from home. The crisis extended beyond the rowing squad, affecting other prominent contingents such as the Indian shooting team and various Indian Olympic Association officials. As local organizers scrambled to relocate athletes to alternative hotel rooms across different locations instead of a centralized Games Village, the chaotic start underscored major administrative challenges threatening optimal athletic performance.
