Assam Floods: Death Toll Reaches 80 As Two More Bodies Recovered in Sivasagar

The devastating flood situation in Assam continues to take a tragic toll on human life, even as water levels begin to recede in some areas. The statewide death toll for the current wave of the deluge has officially reached 80, following the recovery of two more bodies late Thursday. According to the daily flood bulletin released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the two recent fatalities—which included a young boy who drowned in floodwaters—were reported from Nepalikhuti in the severely affected Sivasagar district.
Current Scale of Devastation
While the overall number of affected individuals has dipped from over 3 lakh earlier in the week to a little over 2.12 lakh on Thursday, the crisis is far from over. The ongoing monsoon floods have wreaked havoc across multiple regions, leaving hundreds of villages submerged, infrastructure severely damaged, and livelihoods disrupted.
According to the latest ASDMA data, the devastation is currently concentrated in four major districts:
Charaideo: The worst-hit district, with nearly 80,000 people currently affected.
Sivasagar: The second most affected, with approximately 71,000 people dealing with the fallout, alongside the recent fatalities.
Jorhat: Reporting around 40,000 affected residents.
Golaghat: Also continuing to face significant inundation.
In total, 437 villages across 21 revenue circles remain underwater. The agricultural sector has also taken a massive hit, with over 17,198 hectares of vital crop land damaged by the deluge.
Relief and Rescue Operations Underway
Local administration, disaster response forces, and rescue teams remain heavily deployed in the worst-hit pockets to assist stranded populations, clear debris, and distribute essential relief materials. The state administration is currently operating 112 relief camps and relief distribution centres across the four heavily affected districts.
In the last 24 hours alone, authorities distributed massive quantities of essential supplies to flood-hit families, including:
918.55 quintals of rice
203.9 quintals of dal
146.7 quintals of salt
17,546.4 litres of mustard oil
The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, had earlier announced financial assistance for the families of the victims and implemented measures including a ₹15,000 assistance per affected family. Authorities are continuing to monitor water levels closely, as infrastructure including embankments, roads, and bridges have sustained significant damage across the state.
