The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to announce its new state president on Saturday, coinciding with Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Chennai.
According to The Indian Express, Tirunelveli MLA Nainar Nagendran may succeed K Annamalai as the state president. The official declaration is likely after the party’s state executive committee meets.
Current president K Annamalai recently stated that he is not in the running for another term and will continue as a regular party member.
“Nainar will submit his nomination today between 2 pm and 4 pm. Others might also nominate him. Any required procedural adjustments will follow the party's internal rules,” a BJP senior leader said.
About Nainar Nagendran
Nainar Nagendran represents the Tirunelveli constituency as a BJP MLA and was formerly associated with the AIADMK. His candidacy is seen as a potential step toward rebuilding the BJP-AIADMK alliance.
Nagendran joined the BJP in 2017, after leaving the AIADMK following Jayalalithaa’s death in 2016. He was elected in 2021 and appointed BJP’s legislative party leader. He also ran in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
His Mukkulathor (Maravar) community background and positive ties with the AIADMK leadership position him as a strong candidate for the role.
Eligibility Requirements for BJP State President
The BJP issued a formal notification for internal elections on Thursday. To qualify as a candidate for state president, individuals must be BJP primary members for at least 10 years, have participated in three organizational elections, and secure written endorsement from 10 elected state general council members.
