With marriage, a girl leaves her family and is expected to start anew in her husband's house. While the family tends to adapt smoothly with time, the adaptation from the other side is not as smooth.
The mother’s side of the family tends to be quite nasty from the start. So much so that it’s painful for a woman to stop talking to her mother. If the in-laws tend to make nasty comments about your parents, then those kinds of relationships have to be kept in check.
It is necessary to say something about the parents.
Speak up about how you dislike the kind of comments that are made regarding your maternal relatives. Try to get the negative feelings out on the table and encourage your in-laws to elaborate on their dislike towards your maternal relatives.
Set limits
Unkind remarks that relatives make while talking negative about you parental side needs to come to a halt. Such remarks need to be put out. You can set boundaries that will prevent other relatives talking in a derogatory manner about your parents.
Try to foster unity between both clans.
If there is any friction between the outlaws and the parents’ side, choose occasions that can help bridge the gap for both families. For example, spending time together during holidays or going out for a meal together.
Be courteous at all times
Even when your in-laws badmouth your parents, do not lose your courtesy to them. Remember, your conduct is a reflection of your parents and this is bound to alter your in-laws’ views of you.
Do not allow distance in the marriage
The relationship between husband and wife must not, under any circumstances, suffer because of animosities between one’s parents and one’s in-laws; after all marriage, the relationship with the husband is one’s foremost concern.
Professional help is an option
If after making all attempts the situation is still more tense than before, seeking the help of a counselor may be a good approach. He or she will appreciate the perspective from every family and proffer solutions that would improve the situation for everyone.
