Mehul Choksi, the co-defendant in the PNB fraud case, has submitted in a Mumbai court that he is not willing to travel to India due to his health complications. Economic Times notes that Choksi, who currently lives in Belgium, has said that he is suffering from ‘blood cancer.’
In his sworn statement in the Mumbai court, Choksi said that he is suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukemia. According to Economic Times, in his plea, Choksi has provided some medical documents as well. Apart from that, he has also submitted an Antwerp based doctor’s opinion which states that Choksi is “100% incapable” of making any form of travel. An official quoted by ET said that Choksi should return home as there are several world class doctors who can treat him without any issue.
Earlier, Choksi claimed mental issues after being purportedly kidnapped in Antigua. Actually, Choksi did argue that Indian state officials tried to carry out the kidnapping.
All agencies have sought custody of him as he is also accused in the case with Chokshi and his nephew Modi. Both Modi and his uncle owe a total of 2 billion dollars losses to India, 1 billion sustained during his uncle’s Britian residency and another during his stay in the United States. Chokshi is a citizen of the unterrritory island of Antigua, whilst currently residing in Belgiam for cancer treatments. Meanwhile, Mr. Modi has been serving a sentence in one of the jails across Britian and hasn’t step out of the country for over 6 years. Such is the complexity of India’s legal system where every step turns out to rather be more difficult than anticipated. In all this, New Delhi has been expending considerable effort in gaining his extradition, which has unfortunately proved to be futile so far.
