Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The city of Mangaluru seems calm as of Saturday, one day after the violence that stemmed from the murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty. Police reports indicate no new incidents have occurred, and relative peace has returned to most parts of the area.

Incident Summary and Immediate Response

Suhas Shetty, a controversial Hindutva figure and notorious rowdy sheeter, was shot late on Thursday within Bajpe police limit under mysterious circumstances. His death led to shop and public transport closures on Friday after a bandh called by Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) was widely observed in Mangaluru.

Infrastructural Changes and Security Updates

Due to stone-pelting incidents at bus services in Pumpwell and Kankanady, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) suspended suburban services on Friday. However, some services to the outer suburbs, along with Bengaluru, resumed early Saturday despite the suspension of services for rural routes.

Increased police supervision has been stationed in the more tense locations where conflict is most likely to flare up. Reports of violent assaults have led the police to tighten security, which has been significantly enforced.

Pertaining to issus of security, G. Parameshwara, Home Minister of Karnataka and District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, on Friday, visited Mangalore where they interacted with Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal and Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan to assess the current status of law and order in the city. The ministers made a public appeal to ensure peace but at the same time, ensured that there will be severe consequences for the violence and murder that occurred.

Both private and public markets resumed operations on Saturday, however, staff attendance was minimal. Notwithstanding the interruption, the atmosphere was calm throughout the day.

Under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, Prohibitory Orders have been put in place within the Mangalore City Police limits which will commence from May 2 to 6, to avoid further issues and disturbance.
