Veteran actress Mallika Sukumaran has come out in strong defense of her son, actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran, who is facing criticism following the release of L2: Empuraan. In a detailed Facebook post, she stated that her son is being unfairly made a "scapegoat" amid the controversy surrounding certain scenes in the film.

She firmly denied claims that Prithviraj misled either superstar Mohanlal or producers, including Antony Perumbavoor, during the film’s production.

Facebook Post Dismisses Misconceptions

Writing in Malayalam, Mallika refuted the narrative that her son had concealed key elements of the film from other stakeholders. “Some have spread the idea that Prithviraj deceived Mohanlal and the producers. This is deeply hurtful, especially since I know what happened behind the scenes,” she said.

She emphasized that all stakeholders—including Mohanlal and Antony Perumbavoor—were involved throughout the filmmaking process. “They all read the script, watched the scenes as they were shot, and approved everything together. Blaming Prithviraj alone is unjust,” she added.

Joint Accountability Emphasized

Mallika stressed that the film was a collaborative effort and that any controversy should be addressed collectively, not by singling out one individual. She reiterated that Prithviraj has never misled anyone in his career and that claims to the contrary are unfounded.

Background on the 'L2: Empuraan' Controversy

L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj and starring Mohanlal, released on March 27. The film sparked debate due to scenes referencing the 2002 Gujarat riots. In response, producer Gokulam Gopalan announced that 17 cuts had been approved, with a revised version set for re-release soon.

Following public concern, Mohanlal issued a statement apologizing for any unintended hurt caused to viewers.
