Maharashtra Elections 2024: Competition between two ‘Chandrakant’ on Kothrud seat, MNS made the contest interesting

Pune: After nominations in Maharashtra, the election campaign has gained momentum. The election campaign is also in full swing in the Kothrud assembly seat of the Pune district. The last date for nomination for this seat is 29 October. Voting will be held on 20 November and the results will be declared on 23 November. Kothrud’s seat comes under the Pune Lok Sabha constituency. BJP’s Muralidhar is the MP from Pune.

Electoral history of Kothrud seat

Senior BJP leader Chandrakant Patil is currently the MLA from the Kothrud seat. In the 2019 elections, he defeated MNS’s Kishore Shinde. In the 2014 assembly elections, BJP’s Medha Kulkarni won. Shiv Sena won this seat in 2009, 2004 and 1999. In 1995 and 1990, this seat went to the account of Congress. Since then Congress has not been able to win this seat.

BJP has once again given a ticket to Chandrakant Patil from the Kothrud seat while Shiv Sena (UBT) has given the candidature of Chandrakant Mokate. At the same time, Kishor Shinde is in the fray from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Mokate was the first MLA of the Kothrud Assembly after the delimitation of assemblies in 2009. In 2019, the current MLA Chandrakant Patil defeated MNS’s Kishor Shinde by a margin of more than 20,000 votes. This time a triangular contest is being seen here.

About Kothrud seat

The Kothrud seat was created after the division of the Shivaji Nagar constituency and the dissolution of the Bhavani Peth constituency. This area is considered a stronghold of Shiv Sena. The population of this constituency is around 250,000. It is a general category assembly seat. It is located in Pune district and is one of the 6 assembly constituencies of Pune Lok Sabha seat.

According to the 2011 census, there are about 31,666 SC voters here. Which is about 8.11%. ST voters are about 4,998 which is about 1.28% according to the 2011 census. Muslim voters are about 8,200 which is about 2.1%. The number of urban voters here is high. This time the main contest is believed to be between Maha Vikas Aghadi and Mahayuti.
