The Congress government in Karnataka is reportedly considering a salary hike for state legislators in response to rising living costs. According to a draft copy of the Karnataka legislature salary proposal accessed by CNN-News18, MLAs' salaries could potentially double from Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000, while the Chief Minister’s salary may also see a significant increase, rising from Rs 75,000 to Rs 1,50,000.

Home Minister Defends Proposal

In defense of the proposal, Home Minister G Parameshwara acknowledged the rising cost of living, stating that it affects both the common man and legislators. He explained, “A common man is suffering, and so are MLAs,” highlighting the reasons behind the salary increase.

Parameshwara further elaborated, saying, "Recommendations have come from MLAs and others, and that is why the decision has been taken by the chief minister. Everybody has to survive, and CM will manage to give this money from some account."

What’s Next for the Proposal?

The proposed salary hike is still under review, and further details will likely emerge as the Karnataka government continues its deliberations. The potential pay raise for legislators is aimed at addressing the financial pressures faced by them amidst increasing living costs.
