At a grand musical event in Chennai celebrating the launch of the first single from Thug Life, actor Kamal Haasan reflected on his deep-rooted bond with filmmaker Mani Ratnam. The duo, whose last collaboration was the 1987 classic Nayakan, are reuniting after a 38-year gap for what could be another milestone in Indian cinema.

"Nothing Has Changed Between Us": Kamal on Mani Ratnam

Haasan spoke nostalgically about their early dreams, recalling, “When we met, we used to sit on parked motorcycles and discuss our ideas. We’ve only fulfilled 25% of those dreams—one being Nayakan and now Thug Life. We still have a long way to go.”

He acknowledged that many ideas remained unrealized due to practical limitations like budget and market constraints, noting, “We have to bow before the public.”

Delay Was Their Own Fault, Says Haasan

Haasan candidly admitted the delay in their reunion was self-inflicted: “The reason we didn’t get together earlier—the mistake is with us.” He credited the audience for their current collaboration, stating that in the film industry, ultimate validation always comes from viewers, not just financial projections.

On Mani Ratnam’s Work Ethic and Legacy

The actor praised Mani Ratnam's meticulous nature, recalling how he consistently arrived early on set since Nayakan days. “When I see that, I remember Balachander sir. And Mani knows how big a compliment that is.”

Warm Moments with Co-stars and Crew

Haasan shared light-hearted anecdotes from the set of Thug Life, joking that only Jojo George, not the heroines, says “I love you” to him in the film. He also praised co-star Ashok Selvan’s sensitivity as a performer and highlighted A.R. Rahman’s creative synergy, remarking on their shared cinematic vision.

A Cinematic Reunion Decades in the Making

Thug Life marks the fourth collaboration between Haasan and Ratnam. Their previous film, Nayakan, remains a cult classic in Indian cinema. With Thug Life, expectations are high for a powerful blend of Haasan’s screen presence and Ratnam’s narrative brilliance.

This reunion is poised to be a cinematic event, bringing together legacy, experience, and a shared passion for storytelling.
