Suspense crime, Digital Desk : A former assistant professor at Chennai's prestigious Anna University, G. Gnanesekaran, has been handed a life sentence for the sexual assault of a student under his supervision. The landmark verdict was delivered by the Chennai Mahila Court, a special court designated for cases involving crimes against women and children.
The court found Gnanesekaran guilty of sexually assaulting a research scholar in 2019. At the time, the student was pursuing her research under his guidance in the Department of Printing Technology.
Alongside the life imprisonment, Gnanesekaran was also ordered to pay a fine of ₹10,000, with an additional six months of jail time stipulated in case of non-payment.
Anna University had suspended Gnanesekaran soon after the student filed a complaint and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against him. This conviction and sentencing underscore the gravity of sexual offenses within academic environments and affirm the legal system's commitment to delivering justice for victims of such abuse. It serves as a stark warning against the misuse of authority and power, particularly within educational institutions where a relationship of trust between faculty and students is paramount.
