Nawada: Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Sunday demanded a CBI probe into the incident, four days after a group of people set 34 houses on fire in Bihar’s Nawada district. Manjhi, the Union minister and founder of NDA ally Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), on Sunday visited the Manjhi Tola area under Mufussil police station in Nawada where 34 houses were set on fire by a group of people around 7.15 pm on Wednesday. Police have so far arrested 15 people in the case, including the main accused Nandu Paswan. An FIR has been registered against 28 people, including the 15 arrested accused.

Land mafia involved

The Union minister also met the Nawada District Magistrate (DM) and Superintendent of Police (SP) and discussed the steps being taken for the victims. Speaking to reporters, Manjhi said, “Investigation has revealed that land mafia is involved in this case as well as other cases. I have said many times that RJD leaders have always been found involved in such cases. This incident should be investigated by the CBI so that those involved in the incident are exposed and punished. I demand a CBI inquiry into the matter.”

SHO summoned

The state government on Friday summoned the Mufassil Station House Officer (SHO) for alleged failure to ‘gather intelligence’ after the incident. It is worth noting that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday condemned the incident and directed the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) to monitor the investigation on the spot. Kumar also stressed the need to arrest all the suspects as soon as possible.

21 destroyed

Investigations indicate that land disputes may have triggered the violence. Investigations revealed that out of a total of 34 houses, 21 were destroyed and 13 were partially damaged. Investigations also revealed that most of the houses that were set on fire belonged to people from the Dalit tribal community. The case was registered under the Arms Act and the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
