Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The Met Gala is for sure the one event in the fashion world that engulfs all the attention. From the looks of things, it is also the most exclusive as it is held once a year in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, located in New York. Even though there is a high chance of meeting the star celebrities at the event, one face missing for the past years has been Donald Trump.
A clear example of the star power of Met Gala includes Former US President Donald Trump. Trump has ceased attending the gala for over a decade now, following about a decade of continuous attendance starting from the mid 1980s to 2012. According to the Met Gala chair and Vogue Magazine editor Wintour, Mr. Trump does not meet standards for appeance.
Anna Wintour Grounds more Reason Trump Does Not Meet Expectation
Starting from Trump, Wintour extended the list of not-allowed guests further stating that Trump is the premier and should bear the consequences. In 2017, during an episode of The Late Late Show, Wintour faced the question of which guest she would not allow to return back for the next episode and made that specific declaration naming Trump as her top example and following no other explanation. Since meeting the celebs in 1995, Wintour became a permanent guest list officer handing invitation control fully to herself. Since 1995, Wintour has been foreman for the guest list, which gives her the right to filter the invites, so that only the well- mannered receive them.
Among the reasoning behind Wintour’s decision, considering her history it is quite contradictional. She has had strong opinions against Trump their whole life so the answer is obvious why. One known Political Party supporter, Wintour has been openly involved maintaining strong bonds with political allies like Obama and Bill Clinton.
Other Celebrities Reportedly Banned from the Met Gala
Trump appears to be the only one reportedly left out of the Met Gala. In the past, many other celebrities have been ‘banned’ due to internal disagreements, some public commentary on the event, or actions considered inappropriate by some of the organizers.
Tim Gunn maintains that he was banned after spilling the tea about Anna Wintour being escorted down the stairs by bodyguards, which allegedly angered a lot of people.
Zayn Malik branded the Met Gala as ostentatious after his debut attendance in 2016, leading to his self-imposed boycott of future appearances.
Lili Reinhart may have jeopardized her future invites when she faced backlash for bashing Kim Kardashian’s extreme pre-gala 2022 diet.
Since referring to the Met Gala as a “jerk parade” the event seems to have fallen off Tina Fey’s radar.
Other names that seem to have been also included in some reports are Rebecca Minkoff, Rachel Zoe, Eugenio Casnighi, all supposedly banned.
Some would include Demi Lovato, Amy Schumer, and even Gwyneth Paltrow alongside those who bashed the event but attended later.
Met Gala’s Elusive Culture Ignites Debate
The selective guest list controversy is very much alive as the 2025 Met Gala approaches with its high fashion and art celebration. The strict celebrity invite policy, alongside the elusive nature of the event, plays a quintessential role in the event’s controversial nature.
