Suspense crime, Digital Desk : India has permitted 160 trucks from Afghanistan transporting dry fruits and nuts to pass through the Attari border in Punjab. This was described as a “special gesture” and comes after the first politically high-level contact between India and Taliban leadership.
Diplomatic Context and Pakistan’s Role
This comes after a phone conversation between Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Amir Khan Muttaqi. While India does not officially recognize the Taliban regime, this phone call was a move toward dialogue.
Earlier, it was reported Pakistan had stuck a blockade on the trucks and did not allow them to enter India. Reports suggest truck-loads were allowed to offload merchandise at the Attari border.
Border Closure and Reopening
Due to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India closed the Attari-Wagah border crossing on April 23. This suspension stalled trade, especially the import of Afghan goods into India.
A letter from the Integrated Check Post (ICP) Attari dated May 14 states Indian Customs has given permission to the trucks. The letter also stated 162 freight trucks detained in Pakistan had been cleared to enter India.
Logistics and Customs Clearing
The customs personnel at the Attari border have procured logistics to guarantee uncomplicated ingress of the Afghan cargo. Each step towards the movement of these trucks is being managed as per directions that intend to promote trade.
Statement by Indian Foreign Minister
After talking to Muttaqi on May 15, Jaishankar disclosed some aspects of the meeting through social media platforms. He remarked about a cordial engagement and restated India’s trust with the Afghan people. He also praised the Afghan Deputy Prime Minister’s denial of the attack on Pahalgam and denial of the fabricated narratives intended to damage India-Afghan relations.
