ITR 2025 Filing Update: The IT Department of the Indian Government has simplified filing for ITR 2025. Now, even the ITR-2 form can be filled out on the online portal. This functionality is for individuals wishing to file for income via salary, pension, capital gains, or other sources. Business and self-employed individuals will still have to fill out ITR-3.

Online Mode is Simpler

In a conversation with Mint, CA Chirag Chauhan mentioned that most of the fields are auto-filled in the online version which improves the user experience. He added, With Excel utility, you can download the form, fill it out at your own pace, and submit it. Excel may be an older option, but its familiarity along with the ease of online mode makes it a preferred choice.

Less effort for taxpayers due to online filing.

Filed ITRs can also be submitted using adhaar linked information like Aadhaar, previous returns, tax payments, and updated bank details. However, processes in Excel utility require the user to fill details into a JSON format which is later uploaded onto the webpage.

Utilities came out on the 11th of July.

We would like to inform you that the Income Tax Department released the Excel utilities of ITR-2 and ITR-3 for the assessment year 2025-26 on July 11, 2025. Previously, only ITR-1 and ITR-4 utilities were available. The introduction of online mode has been a blessing to many taxpayers, especially for those filing complex returns, which may include capital gains, foreign income, or income from multiple properties. Pre-filled data in online mode not only minimizes errors but also streamlines the process.

Who is required to file ITR-2?

It is important to highlight that Income Tax Return Form-2 caters to individuals or Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who do not qualify for ITR-1. These may include capital gains, foreign income, or income from more than one property.
