Cab drivers in Hyderabad have kicked off a 'No AC' campaign starting Monday, raising concerns over the fare structures set by ride-hailing platforms like Ola, Uber, and Rapido. The protest, led by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers' Union (TGPWU), aims to highlight the financial difficulties faced by drivers due to inadequate fare policies.
TGPWU Demands Uniform Fare Structure and Government Regulation
The union has called for a uniform fare per kilometre that accounts for rising fuel costs, vehicle maintenance, and proper compensation for drivers. According to TGPWU founder Shaik Salauddin, current algorithms fail to factor in real-time operational expenses, making it financially unviable to offer air conditioning during rides.
The union emphasized that drivers earn only ₹10–₹12 per kilometre after commissions, while the actual cost of operating a cab with AC ranges from ₹16–₹18 per kilometre.
Tipping Requested for AC Services
As part of the campaign, cab drivers will not switch on the AC unless riders voluntarily offer a tip to cover the extra cost. TGPWU has appealed to customers to understand the financial stress cab drivers are under and to show solidarity by tipping for additional comfort.
Airport Trips Also Boycotted by Drivers
In a related protest action, many cab drivers have refused to accept airport rides, citing especially low payouts for those trips. The union warns that if their concerns are not addressed, the No AC campaign could expand nationwide, with support from other gig worker unions across India.
