With the occurrence of a large change associated with the stock market, the trading duration has been extended by 10 minutes. As per the new rules, the investors will be allotted an increased amount of time for trading.

What is the new timing?

Under the changes implemented, the closing time for the market has been extended by 10 minutes. This suggests that the traders and investors will now have an additional span of 10 minutes to buy and sell shares. In plain and simple terms, from August 2026, the trading timings of F&O segment have been enhanced by 10 minutes. At present, the F&O market is closing at 3:30 pm, but from August it will be at 3:40 pm. However, it is important to note that the closing timings of all stocks haven't changed. The modification only affects the F&O segment. The market timings of cash segment will continue at 3:30 pm.

What will investors gain?

Market experts suggest that the extra 10 minutes will provide the investors with better understanding of the market movements, which in turn will result in improved trade execution. These additional 10 minutes will be particularly useful for the trades on days when the market is characterized by increased volatility.

How will the closing price for the futures be derived?
The calculation for futures on VWAP formula will remain the same but only the timing for calculation of it will be amended. Earlier, VWAP from 3:00pm to 3:30pm used to provide the closing price. As per the amended ruling, from August onwards VWAP from 3:10pm to 3:40pm will serve as the closing price.

Reason for the decision

Market regulators and exchanges continuously try to introduce amendments in order to facilitate the enhancement of trading system. This decision to increase the trading hours has been made keeping in view the enhancement of market efficiency and better investor facilitation.
