Users of the platform Instagram are beginning to notice the emergence of unwanted and disturbing content on their feeds, regardless of having Sensitive Content Control enabled. This may be due to changes in the Instagram algorithm or a malfunction within the moderation system. While some content is moderated through the Community Standards, there are steps that users can take on their owns, too. There are methods to ensure that the unwanted content will not appear on the feed and the user will not be exposed to sensitive material. The feed moderation tools ensure that users will have a better experience with the platform. Here are the steps to achieve them.

Setting moderation tools to block explicit material without restrictions will enable smoother navigation for the user.

Instagram has several control levels to ensure feed moderation and eliminate the users’ exposure to inappropriate content. The platform removes all content that infringes on the Community Standards policies such as Hate Speech, Graphic Violence, and other Violent Adult Content. In addition, Instagram does have its own Recommendation Guidelines where bare minimum content restrictions are set in users’ feeds. Any content that does not fall under restriction will not breach any terms.

The Sensitive Content Control feature is one of the most important tools Instagram gives you. It enables users to customize how sensitive content is displayed on Reels, Explore and other sections. For teen’s accounts (ages 13-17), this setting is on the most restrictive mode by default. Adults can choose betweenSensitive content control is on, Standard (default setting) and Less (more restricted) to adjust the level of restrictive content chose Standard. More sensitive content will be displayed when adults above 18 choose More.

What you need before making changes

Make certain that your Instagram app is updated to the newest version.

You need to be above 18 to have the choice of raising sensitive content thresholds.

Those aged 13-15 years need to acquire guardians’ consent to adjust the filters.

How to change the Sensitive Content Control in Instagram

Open Instagram on your device.

Tapping on your profile or profile image takes you to your account’s screen.

Choose Menu (the three horizontal lines) option to get settings in the top right corner.

Select Content preferences followed by tapping on Sensitive content. You can also choose to allow some limitations to be put where necessary.

Adjust sensitivity level

To see fewer sensitive posts, click Less.

To unlock access to sensitive content, click More (where applicable).

Finally, click on Confirm to finalize your changes.

The updates will influence content suggestions on Explore, Search, Reels, comments, and even recommendations accounts. This adjustment does not prevent breaches to Instagram's Community Standards, so posts that infringe on that will be taken down regardless. If you find any content that is offensive by your standards, you can always flag it for the moderators of Instagram to examine it.

In doing so, moderating exposure to sensitive or disturbing content on your Instagram profile becomes less prevalent, thus improving your experience on the app.
