In a clear sign of the shifting tides in the Indian auto market, Tata Motors has once again demonstrated its dominance in the electric vehicle segment, posting its highest-ever monthly EV sales in September 2025. This landmark achievement is a testament to the company's robust strategy and the growing consumer appetite for sustainable mobility.
The Indian auto giant sold a staggering 9,191 electric vehicles last month, a massive 96% year-over-year growth compared to the same period in the previous year. This electric surge was a key driver behind the company's overall passenger vehicle (PV) sales, which also hit an all-time high of 60,907 units in September, marking a 47.4% increase.
The impressive sales weren't just a one-month wonder. For the second quarter of the 2026 fiscal year, Tata's EV division reported a 59% year-on-year jump, with nearly 25,000 electric cars sold. This means that EVs now contribute a record 17% to the company's total sales, showcasing a significant trend among buyers.
So what's behind this electric boom? A combination of factors has created the perfect storm for Tata. The festive season, coupled with the rollout of GST 2.0, provided a significant boost. According to the company, new bookings for their vehicles doubled in the latter half of September right after the GST rate cuts were announced.
The star of the show has undoubtedly been the Tata Nexon. Across all its fuel types, including its popular EV variant, the Nexon brand sold over 22,500 units in September alone. This is the highest monthly sales figure ever recorded for any single passenger vehicle model in Tata's history.
This success highlights the effectiveness of Tata's multi-powertrain strategy. The company has found a sweet spot by offering its most popular models in petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric versions. In fact, the combined sales of EVs and CNG vehicles now account for 44% of Tata's total passenger vehicle volumes.
This record-breaking performance has helped Tata Motors reclaim its spot as the second-largest car manufacturer in India for the month of September. With a strong pipeline of bookings and an agile supply chain, the company is signaling that it's just getting started on its electric journey.
