Among the most alarming findings of the study was the pivotal role played by substance use, specifically excessive alcohol consumption. Researchers identified heavy drinking as the single largest behavioral risk factor linking post-traumatic mental distress to cardiovascular disease. Explaining this dangerous correlation, lead researcher Jennifer A. Sumner noted that individuals grappling with major trauma or severe emotional turbulence frequently turn to alcohol as a mechanism to numb their pain and manage overwhelming emotions.
