Habitat Studio, a well-known performance venue in Khar, Mumbai, announced its temporary closure on Monday following vandalism by Shiv Sena workers. The attack was in response to comedian Kunal Kamra’s parody performance, allegedly targeting Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Official Statement from Habitat Studio

In an Instagram post, the studio said:

“We urge constructive conversations, not destruction, to address disagreements. We do not support hate or harm of any kind. Violence and destruction undermine the very spirit of art and dialogue.”

The statement further clarified that the studio has decided to shut down operations temporarily, explaining:

“We are shocked, worried and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us… Almost like we are a proxy for the performer.”

Denial of Involvement in Kamra’s Video

Habitat Studio stated it was not involved in the making or content of Kunal Kamra’s controversial performance and does not endorse the views expressed in the video.

“Artists are solely responsible for their views and creative choices. We extend a sincere and heartfelt apology to all those hurt by this video,” the statement read.

The incident followed Kamra’s parody of the song ‘Bholi Si Surat’ from Dil To Pagal Hai, in which he allegedly referred to Shinde as a “gaddar” (traitor) — a reference to his 2022 political rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray.

Previous Controversies at Habitat Studio

Habitat Studio was also the venue for the controversial 'India’s Got Latent' episode, which featured Ranveer Ahllabadia and Samay Raina, and drew criticism for vulgar jokes involving parents.

Legal Action and Political Reactions

Multiple FIRs have been registered against Kamra, including one by minister Pratap Sarnaik. The comedian is accused of spreading defamatory and inflammatory content targeting political figures.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis also commented on the incident:

“The Constitution gives us freedom, but it is not absolute. You cannot encroach on others' freedom. There are limitations,” Fadnavis said, urging Kamra to apologize for his remarks.
