The Google Pixel 9a is officially out with new internals, a larger battery, and a better camera. With this new release however, the question remains whether to get the new Pixel 9a, or go for the now heavily discounted Pixel 8a. There is a striking price difference between the two as well, as the Pixel 9a retails for Rs 49,999, while the 8a model is priced at Rs 37,999. Let’s not forget though, the Pixel 9a does outperform the older 8a model with its single configuration combination of 8GB ram and 256GB storage.
Pixel 9a vs Pixel 8a Display and Design
The nine series has always featured a flagship design with premium quality materials. It is no different with the 9a that features a 6.3 inch Actua OLED display with improved peak brightness output. Its counterpart retains the same design without the only difference being the screen size, from 6.1 inches on the 8a to 6.3 on the 9. Both screens are capable of 120 Hz refresh rates. Pixel 9a also supports higher peak brightness at 2700 nits compared to 2000 nits of the 8a. As with other are devices, both are equipped with Corning Gorilla glass 3 for protection, and also have an improved IP rating for water and dust resistance. The Pixel 9a boasts IP68 which is better than the 8a’s IP67.
Pixel 9a vs Pixel 8a: Performance and Software Features
With the Tensor G4 found in the Pixel 9a, Google has taken the lead on the Pixel 8a, which uses the Tensor G3. As with all chip upgrades, this generation will most likely benefit from enhanced AI capabilities and efficiency. The RAM remains the same in each model at 8GB, however, the storage configurations differ: a single 256GB option for the Pixel 9a and 128GB and 256GB options for the Pixel 8a. Both devices are scheduled to receive seven years of OS and security patches and the Pixel 9a will ship with Android 15 whereas the Pixel 8a is using Android 14 at launch.
Pixel 9a vs Pixel 8a: Cameras
Both devices share a dual-camera setup featuring a 13MP ultra-wide lens as well as a new secondary camera: a Pixel 9a 48MP primary camera that replaces the 64MP sensor of the Pixel 8a. This enables the addition of features such as Macro Focus, in addition to improved night shots. Magic Editor and enhanced AI image processing are available for both models along with 4K video recording and image captures.
Pixel 9a vs. Pixel 8a: Battery and Charging

Which is the right choice
The Pixel 9a is the obvious choice if the most recent AI capabilities, longer battery life, and enhanced primary camera are of interest to you. At the same time, what if you find the 8a for a good price? Most experts agree that the difference in performance, and software support means an 8a purchase is justified. The question really becomes how much cash you wish to part with. For those with a limited budget, the Pixel 8a becomes a handy option for those wanting to purchase a Pixel phone. On the other hand, those with a more generous budget will find the Pixel 9a to be a great option.
