Suspense crime, Digital Desk : At the 2025 Google I/O developer conference, Google added a groundbreaking update for Meet: real-time voice translation powered by Gemini AI. This advancement is aimed at shattering language barriers during video calls, enabling users to hear translations in their preferred languages alongside the speaker's voice, intonation, and emotions.
How the New Translation System Works
Natural Voice Translation:
Gemini AI is capable of translating spoken words from one language to another while retaining the tone, style, and emotion of the speaker. Unlike traditional subtitle-centric approaches, Gemini AI utilizes a human-to-human approach that is more engaging.
Low-Latency Processing:
Real-time translation with little to no lag time results in users experiencing fluid conversations comparable to exchanges between native speakers.
Demonstration at Google I/O:
During the keynote, Sundar Pichai engaged in a spoken English-Spanish dialogue. The AI translated seamlessly using inflections appropriate to the speaker’s voice which made the conversation feel native.
Real-time Use in Meet:
User Experience:
An English speaker will hear a Spanish speaker respond in Spanish, and vice-versa. No not reading interferes with subtitles. The feature enables natural conversations without interruptions.
Enhanced Collaboration:
This update will improve inclusivity for international corporate and academic meetings, making communications effortless across different regions.
Feature Availability and Rollout Itinerary
Beta Launch:
The feature will be accessible in beta mode to Google AI Pro as well as Ultra subscribers paying for the tier of their service, starting off with English and Spanish.
Plans for Expansion:
In the upcoming weeks, Google aims to integrate additional languages enhancing their reach throughout countries.
Business Availability:
Enterprise clients will receive access at the end of 2025 for testing and providing feedback. This will be available to Google Workspace users.
