The Social Democratic Party of India and the Popular Front of India are two outfits the ED considers to be interlinked. Because the Enforcement Directorate (ED) suspects the Social Democratic Party of India of money laundering, it carried out searches in twelve locales across the country on Thursday.
A little while ago, the SDPI president MK Faizi was detained at the Indira Gandhi Airport, the surrenders in New Delhi, and charged under the PMLA. This act is punishable under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Other SDPI officials were picking him at the airport which is why they were also arrested.
As per initial media reports, ED armed forces raided the SDPI development center and SDPI head office in Delhi, as well as other establishments in South India in Thiruananthapuram, Malappuram, Bengaluru and Chennai, and then further Northwest in Lucknow and Western India Down South in Thane. These places come under the states Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Chhattisgarh. Other locations included Chennai, Kolkata and Jaipur.
As claimed, the SDPI is also primarily political, expanding the reach of Popular Front of India that is why it was set up in 2009. After some time, it turned violent, which led the central government to declare it an outlawed band in September, 2022. The Indian Union Government has also accused the Popular Front of India of sponsoring terrorism which is why they decided to impose restrictions on their activities.
Nonetheless, the SDPI is not registered with the election commission of India, it is primarily used to participate in political elections.
The recent raids highlight the ED's persistent focus on certain entities allegedly involved in violation of Indian laws, as articulated by ANI news.
Let me be clear SDPI Karnataka state president Abdul Majeed has gone on record to denounce the Modi regime's politics of hatred in the midst of the raids and the capture of the party's national president.
ANI claims that, “The Modi government is using these agencies to intimidate anyone opposing the Waqf Amendment Bill. But the SDPI will not be cowed down by such central government intimidation.”
