Cremations at Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi’s largest cremation ground, were suspended on Wednesday after floodwater from the Yamuna River infiltrated the area, according to officials cited by PTI. Only cremations already underway earlier in the day were allowed to continue, while new ones were put on hold as a precaution.

Located behind the Red Fort along Ring Road, Nigambodh Ghat operates 42 cremation platforms and is the busiest cremation site in the national capital. The halt in services adds to the challenges faced by the city amid relentless rainfall since Monday, which has caused severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions across Delhi.

The Yamuna River’s water level rose above the danger mark by Wednesday afternoon, flooding its floodplain regions and triggering flood-like conditions. In response, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of continued rain in the area. Authorities have advised residents living near the Yamuna floodplain to relocate to safer zones. However, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has reassured the public, stating that despite rising water levels, the city remains safe.

The IMD forecasted cloudy weather with possible showers on Thursday, with temperatures ranging from approximately 24°C to 33°C. Air quality in Delhi was classified as ‘satisfactory’ with an AQI of 57 as of 4 pm Wednesday, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The AQI scale defines 51–100 as ‘satisfactory’, indicating acceptable air quality but advising some caution for sensitive groups.
