Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Thiruvananthapuram – Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has openly acknowledged having "differences of opinion" with his party's leadership, adding a new dimension to the simmering rumors of infighting within the party's Kerala unit. While reaffirming his loyalty to the core Congress ideology, Tharoor stated that his disagreements lie in the strategy and approach needed to effectively challenge the BJP.
The MP's comments come amid a public spat among senior Kerala Congress leaders following the Lok Sabha election results. The controversy was ignited when veteran leader K. Muraleedharan, after losing the Thrissur constituency to the BJP, publicly expressed his disappointment and announced a temporary withdrawal from public life, hinting at a lack of organizational support during his campaign.
This led to a war of words, with Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan criticizing Muraleedharan for airing his grievances in the media, while another senior figure, Ramesh Chennithala, came out in support of Muraleedharan. This public discord has fueled speculation about a growing rift within the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).
When questioned about this internal conflict, Tharoor, who secured his fourth consecutive victory from Thiruvananthapuram, offered a nuanced response. He attempted to downplay the feud as a "normal" post-election discussion but then made his own candid admission.
"I may have some differences of opinion with the party on how to take the party forward and how we should be effective in fighting the BJP and earning the trust of the people," Tharoor stated. He clarified that these differences were about tactics, not principles. "But I don't have any difference with the party's ideology, its secular principles, or its inclusive vision of India."
Tharoor's carefully worded statement highlights a delicate balancing act—acknowledging internal dissent on strategy while trying to project an image of ideological unity. His remarks underscore the ongoing debate within the Congress about its future direction and the most effective way to strengthen itself as the principal opposition force.
