The Congress has proposed an alliance to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde, suggesting they join the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Former Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole claimed that if the two leaders accepted the offer, they could even be considered for the Chief Minister’s post.
Criticism of Ruling Alliance
Patole subtly criticized the current state government, implying that if tensions with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis increased, the Congress would be willing to accommodate both Pawar and Shinde within the MVA fold.
"If Devendra Fadnavis is troubling you, we are ready to support you and form a government together," Patole said during a Holi celebration, as quoted by The Times of India. However, he later clarified that his remarks were made in a light-hearted manner, referencing the festival's spirit.
‘Bura Na Mano, Holi Hai’ – Patole’s Clarification
The Congress leader emphasized that his comments were not meant to be taken too seriously. "I made the statement humorously, saying ‘Bura na mano, Holi hai’. However, if Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde genuinely wish to join us, we will welcome them," Patole added.
Power-Sharing Proposal for Chief Minister's Post
Patole suggested that both Pawar and Shinde are interested in the Chief Minister’s position. "Since Congress is a national party, we will take care of them. We are even ready to rotate the Chief Minister’s post, allowing Ajit Pawar to serve for some time and Eknath Shinde for another period," he stated.
As of now, neither Ajit Pawar nor Eknath Shinde has responded to the offer.
Maharashtra Congress Chief Declines Further Comment
While discussing Patole’s remarks, Maharashtra Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal avoided providing additional details. He reiterated, "Bura na mano, Holi hai," and refused to elaborate further when speaking to TOI.
Criticism of Pawar and Shinde's Governance Approach
Despite extending the invitation, Patole has been vocal in criticizing Pawar and Shinde. He stated that the two leaders no longer prioritize Maharashtra’s development, unlike in the past.
"Previously, they focused on the state’s growth and collaborated across party lines. However, after aligning with Narendra Modi, they have started distorting facts instead of working for the people’s welfare," Patole claimed. He urged both leaders to avoid political negativity and refocus on governance.
Political Uncertainty Continues
With no immediate response from Pawar and Shinde, the political landscape in Maharashtra remains uncertain. Congress's invitation adds another layer of complexity to the state's evolving political equations.
