The trade standoff between the United States and China has intensified following a sharp increase in tariffs and a corresponding exchange of pointed remarks. One day after Beijing issued a strong response to US measures, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning published two direct messages on X, targeting Washington's trade policies.
In one post, Mao shared an image of a red 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) cap, marked as ‘Made in China,’ highlighting the irony of American political merchandise being manufactured abroad. The cap, associated with Donald Trump's political campaigns, was used to criticize US trade practices.
Mao Quotes Mao Zedong in Sharp Retort to US Actions
In another post, Mao Ning quoted former Chinese leader Mao Zedong, stating, “The U.S. intimidates certain countries, stopping them from doing business with us. But America is just a paper tiger. Don’t believe its bluff. One poke and it’ll burst.” This reference echoed China’s historic posture of resistance toward foreign pressure.
The statements came as a response to President Trump’s announcement of a 125% tariff increase on Chinese imports. He justified the move by accusing China of showing “lack of respect” for international trade norms.
China Retaliates with Broad Tariff Measures
China has responded with its own set of tariffs, covering approximately 84% of goods imported from the United States. This marks a clear refusal by Beijing to yield under economic pressure.
While several nations are considering concessions to avoid similar tariff penalties from Washington, China’s firm stance has provoked criticism from Trump. On April 10, Beijing reaffirmed its position, stating it "is not afraid of provocations and will not retreat." The message was reinforced with archived footage of Mao Zedong from 1953, underscoring a theme of resilience.
