Suspense crime, Digital Desk : According to a statement by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, the country is considering the possibility of resuming trade talks with the US. This is the first sign of potential movement since President Trump raised tariffs on China last month.

In a statement on Friday, the ministry claimed that senior US officials are willing to negotiate with China. However, the ministry focused more on the fact that Washington communicated this message through back channels and needs to be genuine in their future engagements.

Positive Market Outlook with Potential Deals in Sight

Chinese officials’ comments were sufficient to boost futures on the S&P 500 Index, which recovered from earlier losses in Asia. A regional equity benchmark also turned positive, the Chinese offshore yuan saw minor gains, and the Australian dollar advanced further, a currency sensitive to shifts in China’s economic outlook.

These comments appeared to signal an end to the trade deadlock, which was bolstered when Beijing retaliated with counter tariffs after the US imposed unprecedented tariffs on their goods.

US Officials Urge Initiative to be Taken by China

From the onset, President Trump has made it clear that Chinese President Xi Jinping has to be the one to jumpstart any talk because from this side, nothing is being done. Quite recently, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been on the same grounds saying that it is China who has to take the escalatory moves towards the conflict.

Economist Woei Chen Ho from United Overseas Bank argues that the current level of import tariffs is not feasible and is expecting some form of negotiations to happen. He also added that the very nature of the negotiations is so intricate that it might just spell trouble for the market as a whole.

Surprising Reconfiguration of the Cabinet Deepens Confusion Around Bilateral Relations

So soon after this debate, it is worth noting that President Trump surprised everyone with his announcement of a cabinet reshuffle on Thursday. Secretary of State Marco Rubio takes also over as national security adviser on an interim basis which will be pivotal in changing policies concerning Russia and China. This obviously has implications and will be felt when it comes to US-China relations. He has also served as the first official of the US to have been sanctioned by Beijing of late. Which is whnot considering the fact that he has taken the most hawkish view on China’s behavior in the region.

With respect to Taiwan and South China Sea, it puts him in even greater contact with China and in his newly widened portfolio Rubios has been raising worries as his past statements suggest over what his office calls China's undermining policies of order in Asia.

US Agencies Withhold Comments

Currently, there has been no official answer from the White House, US Commerce Department, and the Office of the US Trade Representative considering China’s announcement as well as the potential reopening of negotiation talks.
