Sensex and Nifty End Volatile Expiry Session with Marginal Declines as IT Stocks Surge
Indian equity benchmark indices closed on a muted note following a volatile weekly expiry session, with both the Sensex and Nifty registering minor losses amid mixed sectoral performances. Throughout the trading day, market sentiment fluctuated as investors weighed quarterly corporate earnings reports against broader macroeconomic trends. While frontline indices faced minor downward pressure, robust buying momentum in technology counters helped cushion deeper losses, reflecting a bifurcated market where specific heavyweights dictated overall movement.
Top Gainers and Losers: TCS Shines While HUL Slumps on Q1 Earnings
Among individual stock performances, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) emerged as the top gainer on the back of strong buying interest, surging 4.46 percent. Other notable gainers included Eternal, which climbed 4.23 percent, Tech Mahindra up by 3.82 percent, Nestle India advancing 3 percent, and Cipla gaining 2.5 percent. Conversely, Hindustan Unilever (HUL) faced heavy selling pressure, plunging 7 percent following the release of its first-quarter financial results. HUL led the pack of major losers, accompanied by Bharat Electronics (BEL) down 4.24 percent, Coal India falling 4 percent, Tata Consumer Products slipping 2.2 percent, and NTPC declining 2 percent.
Sector-Wise Performance: IT and Realty Indices Lead Gains While Energy Sinks
Sectoral performance remained divided across the board as buying and selling localized in specific industries. The Nifty IT index delivered a stellar performance as the session's best-performing sector, rallying 3.2 percent, closely supported by Nifty Realty which gained 2 percent and Nifty Consumer Durables up by 1.08 percent. Moderate gains were also recorded in Nifty Auto and Nifty Pharma. On the flip side, Nifty Energy bore the brunt of the selling pressure, tumbling 1.7 percent to rank as the worst-performing sector. It was followed by notable contractions in Nifty FMCG, Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Metal, and the key Nifty Bank index. Broader market indicators displayed similar divergence, with the Nifty Midcap 100 registering a marginal gain of 0.1 percent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 closed down by 0.2 percent.
