₹38,000 Crore Blow to LIC: How Sharp Declines in Infosys, Vedanta, and Reliance Slashed Portfolio Value
The ongoing volatility in the stock market has dealt a massive financial blow to the country's premier institutional investor, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). During the recently concluded first quarter of fiscal year 2026-27, a steep downturn in the share prices of several blue-chip and major portfolio companies eroded a staggering ₹38,650 crore from LIC’s equity holdings. From tech giants to metal and energy majors, a total of six key stocks severely underperformed, dragging down the value of the state-owned insurance behemoth's massive investment portfolio.
Infosys and Vedanta Lead the Chart of Major Portfolio Losses
Leading the list of wealth destroyers for LIC during the first quarter is IT major Infosys. A sharp 20 percent correction in the stock price reduced the value of LIC’s holdings significantly, resulting in a notional loss of ₹10,229 crore. As of June 30, LIC’s investment value in Infosys stood at ₹43,895 crore, down from previous highs.
Simultaneously, mining and resources conglomerate Vedanta Limited dealt an even harsher percentage blow. Following a steep 57.12 percent plummet in its share price over the quarter, LIC’s holding value in Vedanta crashed to ₹4,996 crore compared to ₹12,109 crore on March 31, 2026, translating to a massive single-stock erosion of ₹7,113 crore.
Energy Giants ONGC and Reliance Industries Face Heavy Selling Pressure
Public sector energy titan ONGC also added to the state-run insurer's woes. The market value of LIC's stake in ONGC dropped from ₹36,461 crore on March 31 down to ₹29,413 crore by June 30, marking a substantial decline of ₹7,048 crore.
Meanwhile, India's most valued corporate giant, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), witnessed weak market momentum with a 3.72 percent dip in its share price during the quarter. This minor percentage correction on a massive equity base reduced the value of shares held by LIC by ₹3,152 crore, sliding from a March valuation of ₹1,21,548 crore down to ₹1,18,396 crore at the end of June.
IT Majors TCS and HCL Technologies Contributed to the Quarterly Drag
The information technology sector broadly underperformed during the quarter, heavily impacting institutional portfolios. Tata Group flagship TCS witnessed a 13 percent correction in its share price, wiping out ₹6,504 crore from LIC's portfolio value, which previously stood high at the end of the preceding fiscal year.
Adding to the tech sector drag, HCL Technologies also faced persistent selling pressure, mirroring Infosys with a 20 percent drop in share value. This downward slide caused LIC to suffer a quarterly loss of ₹4,604 crore, with holding values shrinking from ₹25,393 crore in March to ₹20,789 crore by the close of June. Despite these short-term market corrections across its diverse asset holdings, LIC remains the most influential institutional pillar of the Indian capital markets.
