Suspense crime, Digital Desk : May is Bladder Cancer Awareness Month, and it encourages us to consider the early warning signals – most notably blood in urine, even if it is only present once and does not hurt.

Dr. G Ravindra Varma, Senior Consultant Urologist and Managing Director at AINU, notes:

“So many people are willing to overlook this cautionary indicator because it’s pain-free and may go away independently, which causes a delayed diagnosis.”

What Is It About Bladder Cancer That Makes It So Dangerous?

The development of bladder cancer frequently commences in the bladder's internal lining — an area housing the bladder. The abnormal cells multiply without control. Bladder cancer is diagnosed at an earlier stage for seventy percentage of the cases. However, if it is detected late, it can severely damage the muscle of the bladder, requiring more aggressive treatment.

As Dr. Varma puts it, “For early-stage bladder cancer, offering the treatment with a procedure called TURBT (Trans-Urethral Resection of Bladder Tumour) which is both diagnostic and therapeutic is highly effective.”

Major Risk Factors and Warning Signs

1. Hematuria (Blood in Urine)

The presence of blood in urine, even just once, should be regarded as critical, particularly among those aged fifty and above. It is the most prevalent early indicator of bladder cancer.

2. Risk Surge Due to Smoking

The bladder is burdened with the long-term consequence of tobacco toxins and the accumulating damage done to its lining. With smoking, the risk of bladder cancer skyrockets by almost four times when compared to non-smokers.

3. Immediate Exposure In The Workplace

People in certain occupations like hairdressers or those working with textile dyes, paints, and chemicals may be at an increased risk of developing bladder cancer due to prolonged exposure to dangerous carcinogens.

Pathway for Diagnosis and Treatment

Initial Scans: The process begins with ultrasound imaging, then a CT scan with contrast is performed to evaluate the extent of the tumor.

TURBT Surgery: This type of surgery is both less intensive and more effective in removing tumors and getting tissues for biopsy.

Supplementary Treatment: Patients receiving an advanced form of tumor excision in addition to the biopsy tend towards intravesical chemotherapy.

Lifestyle Changes and Preventive Action

Resist Smoking

The consumption of tobacco can be optimized with reduced risk in many forms of cancer, bladder cancer being one of them. It begins with forming better lifestyle choices.

Monitoring Symptoms

Do not ignore troubling urinary symptoms that include frequent urination and visible blood, especially after 50 or if you're a smoker.

Stop waring critical after treatment tats are necessary

In the words of Dr. Varma, "if there is no regimen dedicated to preserving bladder health, avoiding repeat procedures becomes nearly impossible."

These procedures should all be done with the understanding that there needs to be regular cystoscopic exams and imaging to detect early signs.
