The political landscape in Bihar has intensified dramatically as the contentious debate over reservations takes center stage. Joining the ongoing political crossfire between prominent National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies—including Union Minister Chirag Paswan and former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi—Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter, Rohini Acharya, has launched a sharp critique against any proposal seeking to review the state's existing reservation quotas.
Opposing the Reservation Review and Defending Social Justice
Taking to social media platform X, Rohini Acharya strongly objected to the notion of reviewing reservations, arguing that as long as deep-seated socio-economic inequalities persist across society, revisiting or tinkering with the established framework is entirely inappropriate.
Acharya emphasized that the current reservation system is not merely a welfare or poverty alleviation scheme, but rather a vital constitutional and structural safeguard designed to dismantle centuries-old social discrimination and marginalization in India. She asserted that discussions surrounding reservation policies must prioritize the core principle of social justice over narrow administrative or economic perspectives.
Bridging the Gap of Inequality and Ensuring Representation
Highlighting the fundamental goals of affirmative action, Rohini noted that reservation is designed to guarantee the active participation and fair representation of historically excluded communities within governance, administration, education, and democratic institutions.
Proportional Representation: True social and economic harmony cannot be achieved until proportional representation is extended to all sections of society, bridging the wide gap of systemic inequality.
Persistent Ground Realities: Despite formal progress on paper, entrenched caste-based discrimination and socio-economic disparities remain pervasive at the grassroots level, making protective shields for disadvantaged groups essential.
Constitutional Safeguards: Citing Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution of India, Acharya reminded critics that the current framework stems from the visionary ideals of Babasaheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the Constituent Assembly, which recognized the empowerment of the underprivileged as an absolute prerequisite for nation-building.
Concluding her remarks, she warned that any premature attempt to review or alter existing reservation provisions risks undermining the social security and fundamental rights of marginalized populations, making the preservation of current quotas vital to maintaining democratic balance and social harmony in Bihar.
