₹6,500 Crore Greenfield Project to Feature Three Runways and Aerocity

In a landmark decision poised to transform aviation infrastructure in eastern India, the Bihar administration has officially greenlit the development of a massive international greenfield airport in Sonpur. The high-stakes project received formal approval during a high-level review meeting held in the Sankalp auditorium, presided over by Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary. Key dignitaries, including Saran MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Principal Secretary Deepak Kumar, Chief Secretary Pratyay Amrit, Development Commissioner Mihir Singh, and senior Civil Aviation Department officials, convened to finalize the blueprint for the state's largest aviation hub.
Techno-Economic Report by RITES Approved
Following deliberations, Saran MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy announced that the techno-economic feasibility report prepared by RITES Limited—a premier public sector undertaking under the Government of India—was formally approved.
The ambitious master plan outlines state-of-the-art infrastructural features designed to handle heavy global air traffic:
Triple Runway System: The airport will boast three massive runways, each measuring 3,800 meters in length, equipped with advanced CAT guidance systems operating in both directions for seamless all-weather landings.
Accommodating Wide-Body Aircraft: Specialized taxiing, landing, and parking bays will be engineered to support some of the world's largest commercial aircraft, including the Boeing 777, Airbus A320, and super-jumbo Airbus A380.
Financial Outlay and Timeline: The project will be executed via a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with an estimated initial investment of ₹6,500 crore earmarked for the first phase. Target completion for Phase 1 is slated for 2030, while the cumulative long-term investment is projected to reach approximately ₹37,000 crore.
Modern Cargo Hub, Aerocity, and Private Terminals
Beyond passenger services, the multi-phase terminal design incorporates commercial ecosystems to boost regional trade and economic growth:
Cargo and Logistics Backbone: The facility will feature a modern cargo hub to facilitate regional export-import supply chains and industrial logistics.
Aerocity and Executive Terminals: Plans include dedicated commercial zones situated between the runways, a sprawling aerocity development, and separate executive terminals tailored for private and corporate aircraft.
Air Traffic Control and Land Acquisition: A towering, modern Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower ranging between 45 and 60 meters in height is slated for construction. To accelerate progress, a dedicated Project Management Unit (PMU) has been established, with Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary issuing strict directives to resolve land-related matters and expedite the acquisition process smoothly.
